Henry Shelton Sanford was a prominent American diplomat and businessman. As U.S. Minister to Belgium (1861-1869), he secured armaments for the Union during the Civil War and established diplomatic relations with the Congo Free State. After his diplomatic career, Sanford purchased land in Florida, founded the city of Sanford, and played a significant role in the state’s citrus industry development.
