The baggage master of an 1887 passenger train was surprised to discover a large, hairy hitchhiker.
Otter Creek
Otter Creek exists in two forms in Florida. The first is a small town in Levy County, with just over 100 residents. Otter Creek has a quiet history, once boasting a thriving lumber industry that has since dwindled. Despite its small size, Otter Creek still holds a claim to fame—Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto crossed the creek during his explorations of Florida in 1539.
The other Otter Creek is a waterway located in Levy County. This 11-mile-long creek winds through forests and marshes before meeting the Waccasassa River, eventually flowing out to the Gulf of Mexico. Kayaking and canoeing are popular activities on the lower, navigable portions of Otter Creek, offering a scenic paddle through various ecosystems.
