Frostproof
Early Beginnings
The settlement that would become Frostproof was initially established in 1850 as Fort Clinch. Named after the local Lake Clinch (which was itself named after a Seminole War commander), the fort was abandoned within months. It wasn’t until the 1880s that permanent settlers arrived, drawn by the area’s abundant hunting and fishing opportunities. It was later known as Keystone City.
The Citrus Boom
The town’s real growth began in the late 19th century with the introduction of citrus cultivation. The name “Frostproof” was a marketing ploy designed to attract potential landowners by suggesting that the area was immune to frost damage. While this wasn’t entirely accurate, the town’s location in central Florida provided some protection from the cold weather that could devastate citrus crops.
Challenges and Resilience
Despite its success, Frostproof has faced its share of challenges. The Great Freeze of 1895 devastated the citrus industry in the region, and subsequent freezes and hurricanes have also impacted the town’s economy. However, Frostproof has shown remarkable resilience, adapting to changing market conditions and diversifying its economy.
Today’s Frostproof
Today, Frostproof remains a charming small town with a strong sense of community. While citrus still plays an essential role in the local economy, the city has also developed other industries, including tourism and agriculture. Frostproof’s historic downtown district has various shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
