Apopka’s story stretches back to Native American settlements around Lake Apopka, with the Acuera people thriving there before the 18th century. Early European settlers in the 19th century were drawn to the rich lands and abundant water, initially calling the area “The Lodge” due to a local meeting place. Apopka officially incorporated in 1882 and boomed as a citrus center, with groves flourishing and fruit shipped by boat down the Wekiwa River. The 20th century saw the rise of Apopka as the “Indoor Foliage Capital of the World” and later the “Fern City,” showcasing its continued connection to agriculture and plant life. Today, Apopka honors its agricultural heritage while embracing a more diverse economy and vibrant community.
